Zebra Mobile Approved for Ohio Innovation Loan Fund (February 2008) Zebra Mobile Inc. will receive a $1.25 million Innovation Fund Loan for six years for software development costs and equipment purchases. The company, located in the Hamilton County Business Center incubator, plans to spend $2.5 million on the project and create nine jobs.

Design LLC opened two months ago at the Hamilton County business
incubator. Its nine employees include five former owners at KZF Design
Inc., including former CEO Steve Kimball, and three former members of
its executive committee. In addition to Kimball, the founders of
Emersion Design include Jim Cheng, a former design principal at KZF,
known for his work on the new wing of the Cincinnati Art Museum; and
Mark Stedfeld, who served as lead project architect for the
Contemporary Arts Center downtown. Alan Hautman was government services
director at KZF. Simon Sapsford was director of structural engineering
services. "It's a pretty powerful group that's worked together for 20 years," said Kimball. "For a small firm, we probably offer as much experience and opportunity for clients as they can find in most of the larger firms in the city." Kimball said the firm has landed a dozen clients since its July 3 opening. It's focusing on the government, higher education and corporate markets and expects first-year revenue of $750,000. The
Ohio Department of Development announced today that HCBC will receive
an increased annual investment from the State of Ohio. The increased
investment will be used to support HCBC's business incubation program,
SoundingBoard, Morning Mentoring, and the Regional Entrepreneurs Forum.
HCBC Director Patrick Longo believes the increased funding is
validation from the State that HCBC is a quality investment. "The State
of Ohio has told us for years that HCBC is a top tier business
incubation program. Now the additional funding will allow HCBC to reach
even more early stage, innovative and scaleable business opportunities
in Southwest Ohio" said Longo. The State of Ohio will provide HCBC with
$350,000 in the upcoming fiscal year that will start July 1, 2007. Hug Delivery Company acquired by Jones the Florist (June 2007) The
Hug Delivery Co., a HCBC client, was acquired in early June by local
company, Jones the Florist. Terms were not announced. The Hug Delivery
Company was developed and founded 18 months ago by Candy Federl, a
former Procter & Gamble Co. manager who also had worked for many
years in marketing for the specialty gift industry. She said she
created her company to offer consumers a gift alternative that would be
full of emotion and sentiment. Her gift baskets include gourmet candy
and plush animals, including her trademarked bear, Hugsby. This is the second HCBC client to be acquired in the past 6 months.
Vanessa Freytag to Women's Fund (June 2007) A
longtime advocate for women's issues is the new executive director of
the Women's Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Vanessa Freytag
will take over the job in July, the foundation said in a news release.
Freytag has been volunteer chairwoman of the foundation's Women's Fund
Leadership Council since 2001. Duties for the full-time position
include working on strategies to improve the lives of women and girls,
and growing the assets of the fund, according to a news release.
